A few things to know if you wish to stay near Downton Abbey

Published in General

Do you remember when the first series of Downton Abbey aired back in 2010? It seemed so uncertain at the time whether the ITV period drama would be a hit, but it’s fair to say that its creator, Julian Fellowes, and its talented cast thoroughly dispelled the doubters. The programme ran for six series in all, and although the last of those was in 2015, the story isn’t over yet, with a film adaptation set for release in British cinemas this September.

At the centre of it all, though – as much as the Crawley family and any of the show’s other memorable characters – is the splendid Yorkshire country house of Downton Abbey itself.

Let’s share the bad news first...

Alas, Downton Abbey itself is strictly fictional, but the good news is that you can still visit – well, sort of. You see, the monumental property to which fans have become accustomed down the years certainly does exist, although it’s actually called Highclere Castle and located in Hampshire, just 10 miles away from our own Regency Park Hotel, in the neighbouring county of Berkshire.

That helps to make us the perfect overnight accommodation for those looking to stay near Downton Abbey. But what else should you be aware of prior to reserving one of our pleasant and spacious bedrooms?

Be prepared – and that means booking tickets in advance

While the fictional Downton Abbey is home to the Crawleys, its real-life counterpart is the country seat of the Earl of Carnarvon, and isn’t open to the public for the entire year. Instead, you will need to attend during one of the public opening periods or one of the dedicated events or tours, which you can find out more about on the official Highclere Castle website at www.highclerecastle.co.uk.

If you’re coming to Regency Park Hotel specifically to stay near Downton Abbey, we would therefore strongly advise you to book the necessary tickets for your visit in advance to avoid disappointment.

But this gorgeous corner of England also offers you so much more

Believe it or not, there are many more great reasons to stay near Downton Abbey than the real-life Downton Abbey itself!

After all, Regency Park Hotel is situated in a tranquil, but well-connected location between Newbury and Thatcham. This leaves you well-placed to explore all manner of other local attractions, ranging from Newbury Racecourse and Donnington Castle to the Berkshire Downs and the Museum of English Rural Life.

Again, the attractions that you are most interested in may be subject to limited opening times, so we would always urge you to do your research before booking and travelling.

Whatever you plan to see and do during your time in Berkshire, though, you can be assured of the most comfortable and restful stay when you make Regency Park Hotel your choice of overnight accommodation for a day, a few days, a week... or perhaps longer.
