5 tips for Newbury locals trying to get fit in 2020

January may be a common time for people across the country – or indeed, county – to launch an exercise routine, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s easier to get motivated for regular fitness activities at this time of year than during any other season.

So, here are just a few steps our Health Club professionals would suggest you take if you want to make that New Year fitness resolution actually stick this time.

Make sure your diet’s right

Unfortunately, exercise alone won’t do a huge amount for your get-fit ambitions if your diet still overdoes it on the fat and sugar. However, it’s important not to put undue stress on your body and kill your initial enthusiasm by switching up your diet too quickly and drastically. So, we’d suggest you begin by identifying the worst elements of your diet, and gradually swap them for healthier options.

Don’t try to do everything on your own

One of the many reasons why a lot of people consider a gym membership in Newbury, is the opportunity it gives them to attend exercise classes in the company of others who’re also pursuing improved fitness. We humans are, after all, social animals, and going to classes – such as our own low-impact fitness, aqua and circuits classes here at Regency Park Hotel – will help you to feel slightly less alone when attempting to take on something as daunting as a big new fitness routine.

Start with exercises that actually suit beginners...

You don’t have to try to reinvent the wheel when you’re coming up with exercises that will enable you to gradually shed those pounds over the course of January and the weeks and months to come. The likes of wall push-ups, side lunges and squats can all be performed by fitness novices, as can simply walking more often – the latter easy to incorporate into your day-to-day routine by making certain usual journeys by foot instead of by car.

...and that don’t even require any special equipment

Granted, having some basic equipment to hand at home, such as dumbbells and a yoga mat, could give you even fewer excuses for failing to get that fitness routine underway than you already have. Nonetheless, you don’t need to have that much on you if you opt for exercises like walking and yoga, and there are plenty of cheap fitness and weight-loss DVDs on the market to get started with at home.

Actually join a gym... but make sure it’s the right one

As you may know yourself from bitter experience, having a gym membership in Newbury is no guarantee that you’ll actually use it. If, on the other hand, the gym in question is in a tranquil and convenient location between Newbury and Thatcham and boasts extensive and sophisticated facilities such as a 17-metre indoor swimming pool, air-conditioned PRECOR gym and complimentary on-site parking, well... your chances of being motivated to attend often are probably much higher.

There’s no need to be cynical about your chances of actually making good on your fitness-focused New Year resolution in 2020 – in fact, you might be only a few wise decisions away from setting yourself well on the way to exercise success!

It couldn’t be easier, for instance, to enquire about a gym membership in Newbury here at Regency Park Hotel; simply call our Health Club now, on 01635 588720, for more information.
